Corporate Sustainability Goals

In 2020, we have set new targets to meet in 2025 following the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This is to ensure our sustainability actions can have the biggest impact and make a significant difference in line with global sustainability goals.

FOR A CLIMATE CARING FUTURE

At Beiersdorf, we know that combatting climate crisis is the central challenge of our time. To drive climate action protection at all levels within the company and our value chain, we pursue a holistic approach with our mission: We bring climate commitment to skin care.

Bringing our commitment to the next level, we have:

  • Set the target of of net zero emissions by 2045
  • Already met our Scope 1 & 2 target for 2025 (a reduction of 19% absolute CO2e emissions was achieved)
  • Updated our short-term climate target in this context, to reducing our absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 70% and absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 40% (vs. 2018) by the year of 2032.
  • Set the target that by 2045 we will reduce absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 90% absolute (vs. 2018)

FOR FULLY CIRCULAR RESOURCES

Worldwide, the consumption of natural resources, waste production and negative environmental impacts have risen continuously over the past decades. In response, Beiersdorf is committed to strengthening the circular economy: The recyclability of our packaging and ingredients is of central importance to us and is therefore anchored in our strategic focus area “For Fully Circular Resources”. To make our actions measurable, we have set the following global targets for packaging by 2025:

  • To use 50% less fossil-based virgin plastic in our packaging  and to integrate at least 30% recycled material in our plastic packaging compared to 2019.
  • Moreover, 100% of our packaging is to be refillable, reusable or recyclable by 2025.

With our packaging targets, we not only reduce our resource consumption but also work towards our GHG reduction targets. This is because most of our Scope 3 emissions are directly connected to the components used in our products, including both the ingredients and packaging materials. This is reflected in our roadmap for our 2032 and long-term Net Zero targets, which focuses on the decarbonization of our product portfolio as a key lever.

FOR SUSTAINABLE LAND USE

Natural resources are an important basis for the development of our product formulas. Neither through the procurement nor through the use of these raw materials do we want to burden or damage the environment. Sustainable land use and thus also the preservation of biodiversity in regions from which we source our raw materials is therefore a central concern for us.

Our goal is to source our main renewable raw and packaging materials (palm (kernel) oil derivatives, soybean oil, coconut oil and paper) from sustainable and deforestation-free sources by 2025.

We have had robust sustainability programs in place for palm-based raw materials and paper-based packaging for many years. Similar programs for other raw materials are currently under development.

FOR REGENERATIVE WATER ENVIRONMENTS

As water plays a central role also in our production processes, in our product formulas and when consumers use our products, water is an important focus area of our sustainability agenda.

Our targets include:

  • 25% reduction of our water consumption per manufactured product by 2025 (vs. base year 2018)
